A Fresno State Heisman Candidate?!?

Can We Just Talk About Fresno State Right Now?

To my loyal blog readers (aka Mom and Dad):

I am holding off on my SEC/PAC 12 beat to explore something new: the Mountain West and Fresno State.

The Bulldogs of Fresno State are undefeated and ranked fourth in the nation for passing yards, and senior quarterback Derek Carr has 19 touchdowns this season, with only 4 interceptions and 1,864 passing yards. Oh, and a 70.7% pass completion average.

Can someone say Heisman?

To put things in perspective, Heisman-candidate Johnny Manziel has 14 touchdowns, 5 interceptions and 1,835 passing yards. His completion average is a little better, at 73.2%.

Oregon’s Marcus Mariota has 17 touchdowns this season, no interceptions and ,1724 passing yards with a completion average of 60.6%.  So in comparison, Carr is statistically playing at a top-notch level.

(Reminder: this is in the Mountain West and not the SEC or PAC 12, but its certainly worth mentioning.)

Fresno State is a scrappy team, and I like scrappy teams. The bulldogs pulled off wins against Rutgers in overtime, 52-51, Boise State, 41-40, and Hawaii, 42-37. So what we have determined here is that they have an explosive offense and a lackluster defense. However, their defense redeemed themselves last week against Idaho, beating the Vandals 64-14.

Fresno State is raked 17th in the AP Poll and 19th in the coaches’ polls. With BCS rankings coming out after this week’s games, Fresno State has a legitimate chance to be the Cinderella team of the BCS. If Fresno State can beat UNLV this week, its schedule is conducive for an undefeated season and a potential bowl bid.

I’m rooting for Fresno State this year.  This could potentially be Fresno State’s best finish since their 1985 season, where the bulldogs went 11-0-1.

So bark on, Bulldogs!
