Once known as Marine Midland Arena, First Niagara Center comes to life. By Meaghan McGrath The Buffalo Sabres team has been developing this season, along with their arena. The arena, known to fans as the HSBC Arena since 1999, changed its name before the preseason started this year after First Niagara Bank bought out HSBC. Now known as the First Niagara Center, this arena will still primarily be the home to the Buffalo Sabres, located in downtown Buffalo, New York.
This rink is one of the largest indoor facilities in New York, seating over 18,000 fans for both hockey and lacrosse. The eight-sided Jumbotron is one of the main accents to the rink (despite once falling onto the ice before a game) with four sides showing video and the others displaying messages.
This arena is also home to the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League. Many other famous hockey competitions have been featured at the First Niagara Center, including the 2008 NHL Winter Classic, and the Frozen Four in 2003. Talking to Buffalo fans, the arena has been a place to enjoy the game and to have fans come together to celebrate Buffalo sports and culture.
