According to a recent Harris Poll, the NFC South’s popularity is in decline. The poll ranks the popularity of each NFL team based on adult surveys. For the fifth year in a row, the Dallas Cowboys top the list. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers round out the top three. With the New Orleans Saints dropping six spots to 11th place and the Atlanta Falcons falling from 10th to 15th, the NFC South is without a team in the top ten. The Carolina Panthers are the lone member who improved, moving from 23rd to 20th and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sit at 28th.
The question is, why? This is a division full of exciting teams with explosive offenses, led by quarterbacks who put up gaudy numbers. The Saints are a team looking to win the Super Bowl for a second time in three years with one of the best and most prominent players in the league, QB Drew Brees. The Falcons are led by Matt Ryan, one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. Rookie WR Julio Jones is looking to make an immediate impact to the Atlanta offense. The Bucs are a young team looking to make a playoff run since coming off the greatest single season turnaround in franchise history last year. The Panthers have the latest Heisman Trophy winner, Cam Newton, putting up record numbers for a rookie quarterback. While there hasn’t been much success for the NFC South (with the exception of the Saints) in recent years, the division is full of teams that are trending upwards quickly. Surely the division’s popularity among fans will follow suit.
