In the 2010-2011 season, Michigan State finished 6th in the Big Ten conference and went 19-15 overall. The Spartans finished up last year in the middle of the pack, providing them a stable springboard to enter this season on the right foot. However, one player’s knee threw a wrench into that plan.
Starting senior forward Devlon Roe announced that he will be unable to play for the Spartans this upcoming season. Plagued with a knee injury from his earlier career days, Roe decided that he could no longer continue to play with such intense pain. Roe described his feelings on the situation: “This is the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make.” Almost any other athlete can attest to the feeling of pushing your body past its limit; it takes a lot of courage for an athlete to put health and wellness above the love of the game.
Devlon Roe will always be a loved and respected member of the Spartans, as he was a part of two Final Four games in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He may no longer be on the active roster, but the foundation he laid remains. Roe is still attending Michigan State and is expected to graduate in May.
Roe will surely be missed by the Spartans this season; he is a crucial missing link. His seniority and leadership will force the other five seniors on the team to step up and fill the void. If none of Roe’s teammates can take up this cause, the Spartans may be in for a rough season.
