NHL Realignment

Should the classic Northeast Division teams be broken up? By Meaghan McGrath

Lately, hockey talk has primarily focused on the rumors of an NHL divisional realignment beginning as early as next season. Many teams are opposed to this realignment, nowhere more than the Northeast, due to the classic rivalries that exist within the division.

Look at the five teams in the division: the Boston Bruins, the Ottawa Senators, the Buffalo Sabres, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens. This division is one of the few divisions that features teams from another country (commonly referred to as Canada), but this heightens the level of play. Having the multi-country division gives way for a larger rivalry and more home team (and country) spirit, especially during away games.

Perhaps one of the most famous rivalries in this division involves the Bruins and the Canadiens. If either of these teams were moved and could not play each other as much in divisional play, fans would be crushed. This rivalry is one of the better NHL hockey rivalries, and has always been seen as a classic.

Unlike many other divisions in the NHL, the Northeast will probably stay the same.  These five teams will hopefully stay together, with an addition of another team or two next season.  However, until the vote in December, just be entertained by current hockey.
