Super Bowl Sunday

Tonight is the big night. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers march onto the unnecessarily large field at the new Cowboys Stadium to compete for the richest prize in the NFL. 

Now, some random facts to impress your friends:
1. The Packers are the league's only community-owned franchise. The team is divided among 112,120 stockholders and a seven member "executive committee" directs the business side of the organization.

2. The "G" on the Packers' helmets stands for "Greatness," not Green Bay.

3. The Steelers' logo is taken from the Steelmark logo, a nod to the city's rich steel heritage.

4. Art Rooney Sr., affectionately known as "the Chief" in Pittsburgh, purchased the Steelers in 1933 for $2,500. 

5. The Steelers merged with the Philadelphia Eagles during World War II to form the "Steagles."

6. Co-owner Earl Lambeau paid for Green Bay's uniforms in 1919 with a sponsorship from his employer the Indian Packing Company, hence the name "Packers."

7. The Steelers are known for having consistency at the head coaching position (only three head coaches since 1969), but in 1941, the team went through three head coaches: Bert Bell (0-2), Aldo Donelli (0-5), and Walt Kiesling (1-2-1). Kiesling returned the following season to lead the Steelers to their first winning record.

8. The Packers lead the all-time series, 18-14.Green Bay won all eight meetings between the franchises from 1933 to 1946.GB shutout Pittsburgh three times during this stretch, the only shutouts played between these two teams.

9. The biggest points differential is 47. The Packers outscored the Steelers by 47 twice, 1933 and 1941. 

10. The Steelers have won the last three meetings.

11. Green Bay is 3-1 in Super Bowls. The franchise is 1-1 when wearing their white uniforms.

12. Pittsburgh is 6-1 in Super Bowls. The franchise is 3-1 when wearing their black uniforms. 

Only one six seed has gone on to win the Super Bowl, the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2005. Green Bay hopes to add its name to that list tonight. Festivities start at 6:30 on FOX. The Black Eyed Peas will be performing at halftime, so be sure to schedule your beer run for then. Also, be prepared for a bunch of crappy commercials that everyone will make a big deal about tomorrow at the water cooler. Drink responsibly and enjoy the game. Queen's "We are the Champions" for the victors and War's "Why Can't We Be Friends" for the losers.
