Robert Sarver is at it again, folks. Two weeks ago it was Sarver and Dan Gilbert that ruined what was reportedly an almost done deal in the collective bargaining negotiation. To recap, that is interference from two owners who should be far from the top of the power chain when it comes to the negotiating.
Dan Gilbert has apparently backed off his high desires. Maybe the Knicks James Dolan and Lakers Jerry Buss found Gilbert in a dark hallway and shook him down for his lunch money and told him to fall in line. Sarver hasn’t done the same, though.
From Yahoo! Sports: “Once again, Phoenix Suns owners Robert Sarver was the most vocal proponent of the owner’s case…He’s been a strong advocate for a hard salary cap, and a source said that Sarver told the players in the room that he hadn’t been able to get the return on buying the Suns that he had hoped.”
I don’t feel bad for Sarver. If he isn’t getting as much money as he wants from owning a professional sports team, there are plenty of people out there that would gladly take the Suns off his hands.
And it doesn’t seem like an entire lost season would help Sarver make money, even if the owners do end up “winning” the negotiations.
Sarver already missed his team’s championship window, losing in the Western Conference three times since 2005; perhaps he realizes this and wouldn’t mind missing a season in which he would be a losing team. But it isn’t fair for the owners or players to have progress sullied by a lone voice. A lone voice that really should not be that loud.
