Northwestern Win Streak

The Northwestern Wildcats have been on quite the roll so far this season. By Hannah McCaffrey

After finishing 17-14 last season, the Northwestern Wildcats have stepped up their game. Northwestern has made a surprising charge forward, starting this season off with a 5-0 record. The Wildcats made a big statement by winning the Charleston Classic, beating the LSU Tigers, the Tulsa Hurricane, and the Seton Hall Pirates to win the championship. Junior G/F Drew Crawford’s leadership has been a huge component in the Wildcats successful start to the season.

In addition to being named the Charleston Classic MVP, Crawford was also named as the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time in his career. During the Classic, Crawford averaged a very strong 24 points and six rebounds per game.

Friday afternoon, the Wildcats hosted the Stony Brook Seawolves, barely coming out on top with a 63-58 win. The team seemed to come off flat and overly confident after three huge wins. The score was tied at 32 in the beginning of the second half. “I didn’t try to do anything special. I’m just playing in the flow of the game,” said freshman G Dave Sobolewski. That just might have been the problem.

It seems like winning the Charleston Classic left Northwestern a little too confident facing the Seawolves. “You can’t downplay who you’re playing,” said Crawford. If the Wildcats learn their lesson and continue on their winning streak, it will make inter-conference play much more exciting for the Big Ten this season.
